Star Wars fans have long awaited the Season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian, and episode 1 of season 2 certainly did not disappoint. We last saw Mando (Din Djarin) leaving Navarro with Baby Yoda, instructed by The Armorer to reunite Baby Yoda with his own kind. The Armorer recognized Baby Yoda’s ability as the force and describes a group of “ancient sorcerers” known as Jedi, who were once the enemies of Mandalorians.
SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 CHAPTER 1 OF “THE MANDALORIAN” BELOW
And Season 2 picks up immediately on this quest. Mando is trying to find another Mandalorian to gather any information he can on the Jedi. He travels to meet Gor Koresh who seems to be running a gambling ring with creatures fighting to the death. Mando takes out Koresh’s goons in an action packed scene with a hilarious moment from Baby Yoda and gets the information he needs from Koresh before leaving him tied up and essentially for dead. Koresh tells Mando that the Mandalorian he knows in on Tatooine, one of the staple planets of the Star Wars universe, where Luke Skywalker’s journey began and where Mando already visited in the Season 1 Chapter 5 episoded titled “The Gunslinger”. The end of that episode had an easter egg of the sound of what was thought to be Boba Fett’s boots and armor investigating where Mando had just been.
And when Mando arrives to the run down city of Mos Pelgo he quickly encounters Boba Fe— nope its not actually him, its Timothy Olyphant’s character Cobb Vanth, wearing Boba Fett’s famous armor. Cobb Vanth is known in Mos Pelgo as the Marshall and dons the Mandalorian armor to protect the city from Tuskan raiders and bandits. Mando immediately demands the armor back, seeing Vanth’s wearing of the armor as stolen valor and extremely disrespectful to Madnalorian culture. Vanth and Mando then make a deal after the town is disrupted by an enormous Krayt dragon: if Mando helps kill the Krayt dragon, Vanth will return the armor to him.
Mando know this will be no easy feat and convinces the reluctant Vanth and villagers of Mos Pelgo to team up with a local tribe of Tuskan Raiders to take down the Krayt Dragon. The distrust between the two groups is evident, but both know that they must slay the Krayt Dragon in order to live in peace; the dragon has caused mass destruction and death to both group’s homes. The groups lay a trap outside the Sarlacc pit that the dragon resides, having eating the Sarlacc. They bury a bunch of explosives in the sand, hopeful to draw the Krayt Dragon out of the pit and explode it when it crawls over the trap. However, the underbelly of the the dragon is not so easily exploded and all hope seems lost as the dragon continues eating and shooting acid at both Tuskan Raiders and Mos Pelgo villagers.
However, Mando comes to the rescue once again. He allows the dragon to swallow him and a bantha loaded up with more explosives before shocking the dragon with the pulse rifle, jetpacking out from its insides and then exploding the sacrificial bantha. The Krayt Dragon is then slain and Cobb Vanth holds up his end of the bargain returning the armor to Mando, unbeknownst to either of them it belongs to Boba Fett. Mando is then off to try and find a different Mandalorian and through their network, a Jedi with more information on Baby Yoda.
However, as he rides across the Tatooine desert on his speeder bike, we see a figure observing him from a distance. The figure turns to face the camera and is revealed to be Temeura Morrison! Morrison played Jango Fett in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and has voiced Boba Fett in several Star Wars video games. If this character is not Boba Fett, than that is a pretty cruel trick by John Favreau and the creative team who work on “The Mandalorian”. I, along with almost all of the show’s fans, are pretty sure however that this is indeed Boba Fett. The only question now is, will he pursue Mando to get his armor back and how does he tie in to the greater story of Season 2 of the show? This episode did not at all dive into the aftermath of the Moff Gideon encounter at the end of season 1 and he will surely still be on the hunt for Baby Yoda. But this and more is sure to be explored in the coming weeks. But for now, enjoy this action-packed premiere of Season 2 of The Mandalorian!
