The Quarantine Cup: Is it fair to say “deadlegs16” is washed up?

With the pandemic still ongoing, our favorite sports still up in the air for returning, and our favorite city night spots still closed, saying things have been dull these past few months would be quite the understatement. But hey, when there isn’t much to do, you’ve got to make your own fun and entertainment. In our prime days at UMASS, there was usually something going on, but when there wasn’t, we always came up with something to do. Whether it was turning couches into barricades and having a NERF battle royale or turning the living room carpet into the 18th green at Augusta and having intense putt offs into a solo cup, we were creative in making our own fun. So during these painfully boring COVID19 months, our amazing friend and former roommate at the very Townhouse 47 from which these takes originate, Alex Wolfe (known as “Evade” in the Call of Duty world) has done just that. Every Friday, he hosts The Quarantine Cup! The Quarantine Cup is a Call of Duty tournament consisting of several game modes on a variety of online maps with either teams of 4v4 or 5v5, that switch after every best of 3 series. It has been a great way for our friend group to do something every week together and an event to look forward to at the end of every work week when the competition and sports void needs to be filled.

Townhouse Takes is a proud sponsor of The Quarantine Cup that just completed its 7th week last night! 15 different players have competed over the 7 weeks and new competitors are joining every week. You can check out the roster, leaderboards, weapon class recommendations, and event info at https://www.quarantinecuphub.com/ . You can even register for the weekly Quarantine Cup or other events right on Evade’s website! Speaking of other events, on Sunday July 19th, Evade is hosting a duos Warzone tournament! Grab a partner and drop into Verdansk, and participate in 5 Warzone games, in a race to the the most kills. A victory gives you 5 bonus kills, but again it is a kill race. Gift cards and other prizes are up for grabs every week in both the Quarantine Cup and this Warzone tournament. To get in contact with Evade about registering, click on that link and go to the Events tab.

But now that you know what the Quarantine Cup is, its time to talk about something that is on most of the competitors minds. Evade names an MVP every week (which comes with COD points!) based on who had the best performance in that cup. Check out the MVP announcement on his Instagram page bombsawaygg. One of our friends and writer of the Solar Opposites Review on Townhouse Takes (great read on this site), AJ known as “deadlegs16” won his MVP in week 1 when everyone was not up to speed and acclimated with his tricks and tactics. Back in the first few weeks, Evade would name the MVP himself, but now it is up to a vote for Evade’s 3 weekly nominees. The leading QC data analyst and self-proclaimed top tier player has played in every cup and just has the 1 MVP to show for it. Since his impressive (if you want to call it that) week 1, deadlegs16 is in a dry spell. There is no denying his talent, he puts in the work during the week and is for sure what we would call “nice on the sticks”, but for whatever reason he is coming up short in the voting and seems to be lacking in the clutch department for the big prime-time series. When he falls short in the MVP voting, AJ let’s his saltiness be known, a la James Harden losing the NBA MVP to Giannis, both blaming the media and voters. When the going gets tough in the series on the battlefield, deadlegs16 shows the same notable leadership qualities as Kyrie Irving on the 18-19 Celtics, statpadding and patronizing his fellow teammates. Like I said, talent is not the issue here, deadlegs16 is a very good shot and an incredible tactician, particularly in domination. But the complaining and slandering of other MVP recipients won’t do much for his case with the voters.

However, I truly believe that deadlegs16 CAN and WILL return to a truly worthy MVP form. Deadlegs had his first losing series record in 7 weeks of QC and honestly I will say that’s damn impressive. BOLD PREDICTION: Deadlegs is going to use the poor performance last Friday and my smear campaign today as pure motivation and come back next week with a QC performance for the ages. And when he does, I’ll be the first one to the polls to vote for him. Call it a challenge, call it dropping the gauntlet, but let’s see it. Be the first to get 12 map wins in a week. But just remember, the old Deadlegs did it for the fans and for the game, not to silence the haters. Maybe getting back to that mindset will get him out of his own head and back to the top of the game. One thing is for certain, the drama of the Quarantine Cup is heating up every week with the community growing and events expanding. More content is coming from both Evade and Townhouse Takes for the Quarantine Cup as well with plans in place to record video, highlights and commentary for the events.
